Lip and Tongue Tie Release Q&A

What is lip and tongue tie release?

Lip and tongue tie are conditions in which the frenulum (soft tissue connecting your lip to your gums or tongue to the bottom of your mouth) is too thick or short. Lip and tongue tie release is also called a frenectomy. The procedure alters abnormal tissues to help you move your tongue or lip more freely. This can improve your speech, smile, eating, confidence, and quality of life.

Is the lip and tongue tie release right for my child or me?

Dr. Morris examines your mouth and discusses your symptoms and oral health history to determine if you or your child would benefit from lip and tongue tie release. Lip and/or tongue ties don’t always need treatment, particularly in mild cases. However, if it causes problems with speaking, eating, or smiling, a frenectomy is an excellent solution.

Too tight or short frenulums can contribute to gum recession, gum disease, or tearing and bleeding of the frenulum when not addressed.

Dr. Morris treats patients with lip or tongue ties as young as several days old.

What are the benefits of lip and tongue tie release?

If lip tie or tongue tie causes problems for you or your child, undergoing lip and tongue tie release provides the following benefits:

  • Improved oral health
  • Flawless smile
  • Easier chewing
