Fillings Q&A

What are fillings?

Fillings are made of tooth-colored dental materials (glass, plastics, etc.) and can repair minor tooth damage or decay. Dr. Morris uses a Solea® laser to first remove any decay without the need for shots.

She can also eliminate old gold or silver fillings and replace them with tooth-colored fillings to optimize the appearance of your beautiful smile. Unlike dark-colored fillings, white fillings blend in perfectly with the natural color of your teeth.

What are fillings used for?

Fillings can repair, strengthen, and protect teeth from future damage. The Morris Dental Associates team uses filings to treat minor decay or imperfections, such as small cracks. If you have severe decay or damage, you might need a dental crown, root canal, or even extraction in extreme cases. Morris Dental Associates also offers veneers to mask minor imperfections.

Am I a candidate for fillings?

Dr. Morris will determine whether you would benefit from fillings after discussing your symptoms, reviewing your oral health history, and examining your gums and teeth. She will also examine the results of your dental X-rays to establish the most appropriate treatment plan.

Signs you may need a filling include tooth discoloration, cracks, pain, or sensitivity. The earlier you seek treatment for decay or damage, the easier it is to treat an affected tooth.

What happens during filling placement?

Dr. Morris removes any decay using a laser or other techniques before applying dental fillings. She applies filling materials to your tooth, uses a special light to harden the filling, and sands it down if needed to remove any rough spots.

What should I expect after receiving fillings?

After you receive a new filling, you can resume your typical daily routine. There’s no downtime needed. When cared for properly, tooth-colored may last more than 15 years. Protect your teeth from future decay and damage by brushing them after meals, flossing daily, attending six-month dental cleanings and exams, and not chewing on hard objects.
