Preventive Dentistry

Many patients may not have heard of preventative dentistry. However, they probably practice it every day. At Morris Dental Associates, we encourage our community to practice oral health at home and in our dental office.

At-Home Dentistry

Dr. Morris recommends that you and your family develop an oral health routine at home. She suggests that you and your family brush, floss, and use mouthwash twice daily. She recommends a soft-bristled toothbrush along with low-abrasive fluoridated toothpaste. The toothbrush is soft enough not to irritate your gums, and the toothpaste will remove plaque and debris along with strengthening the outer layer of your tooth.

In-Office Dentistry

Dr. Morris and her team focus on helping the community and their families improve their oral health. To go along with your at-home preventative dentistry oral health routine, Dr. Morris recommends visiting Morris Dental Associates every six months for a dental exam and cleaning. An oral exam and cleaning every six months is one way you can improve your oral health with preventative dentistry. Dr. Morris and her team will remove excess plaque and debris from your teeth during the exam. If these items are not removed, it will increase your risk of developing tooth decay and other complications.

If Dr. Morris finds any dental concerns during the exam, she will present a treatment plan for you.

Dental Sealants

Dr. Morris also recommends dental sealants for patients prone to back molar cavities and young children. First, Dr. Morris recommends that you bring them to Morris Dental Associates for a dental sealant once your child’s back molar erupts. The dental sealant is painted onto the back tooth and helps prevent dental decay on hard-to-reach back molars. It will fill in the crevices on the top of the tooth. The sealant will create a barrier between the tooth and the eating surface forcing debris and bacteria to slide off of the tooth rather than lodging in the tooth’s crevices.

Dental Fluoride

Dr. Morris also offers fluoride for her patients. Dental fluoride is a rinse for your mouth done in the dental office. When the fluoride touches the tooth, it chemically strengthens the outer layer of the tooth. Maintaining the outer layer of the tooth decreases the risk of tooth decay. Dr. Morris recommends dental fluoride treatment for all patients. Additionally, she suggests that patients use fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash to get the benefits of fluoride at home.

Dr. Morris and her team agree that to maintain healthy teeth, preventative dentistry is necessary. Preventive dentistry has a few different components. First, we recommend that patients practice preventative dentistry at home. To do this, brush, floss, and use mouthwash twice a day. Then, Dr. Morris recommends that you and your family visit Morris Dental Associates every six months for a dental cleaning and exam. We can also offer you two different preventative treatments: sealants and fluoride. With this mixture of preventive medicine, Dr. Morris and her team hope to keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime.
