What is a Dental Cleaning?

At Morris Dental Associates, Dr. Morris recommends that patients get a dental cleaning every six months. Regular dental cleaning allows the team at Morris Dental Associates to remove plaque and debris before they cause dental decay.

Scraping. A dental cleaning is a procedure where Dr. Morris and her team perform an in-depth cleaning of your teeth and gums. First, the team will remove any plaque and tartar on your teeth. Plaque and tartar can become stuck to the teeth, requiring the team to scrape them off your tooth. This process should not hurt, but you may hear some scraping. The team will use a small mirror to visualize your teeth and ensure they have removed all debris. The dental team recommends an excellent dental routine because it can remove plaque at home and prevent tartar, which can only be removed in a dental office, from forming.

Brushing. Next, the team will use abrasive toothpaste to clean your teeth. Dr. Morris recommends that abrasive toothpaste be only used during an in-office dental cleaning. Using abrasive toothpaste can weaken the enamel and increase the risk of tooth decay. In the office, during your semi-annual dental cleaning, the abrasive toothpaste removes excess plaque to ensure your teeth are debris-free.

Flossing and Rinsing. The next step is flossing. The team will carefully floss between each set of teeth, ensuring that they remove any leftover debris. Dr. Morris also recommends that her patients floss at home to remove daily debris that may get stuck between the teeth. Removing debris daily can help prevent tooth decay. Next, the team will have you rinse your mouth. The dental cleaning is almost over.

Fluoride.  Although not a mandatory treatment, Dr. Morris highly suggests that her patients get a fluoride treatment after a dental cleaning. When the fluoride solution touches the outside of your teeth, it chemically strengthens the outer layer, the enamel. Fluoride treatment can help prevent tooth decay.
